Lead Thickener Bridge Structural Inspection

Kuna provided critical structural engineering and inspection services for repairs to a steel bridge that supports key mill equipment at a remote mine. These repairs were essential for the continued operation of the mill and had to be completed during a scheduled shutdown. The project involved a compressed schedule, where design and construction activities were executed concurrently to meet the tight timeline, with material procurement initiated early in the process to avoid delays.

The construction phase included the installation of scaffolding, cleaning and preparation of the steel structure, and a detailed inspection for defects. Kuna played a dual role as both engineer and inspector, providing concept design, procurement support, evaluation of the existing structure, and detailed repair designs. Throughout the construction, Kuna ensured proper field coordination with the owner and contractor, delivering ongoing quality assurance as repairs were made, including welding and other structural modifications.

Kuna’s team documented the condition of the structure and welds, alongside as-built construction details of the repairs. A comprehensive report was produced, which included recommendations for further repairs and considerations for long-term planning to ensure the continued integrity of the structure.
