Native Village of Kotzebue Multipurpose Building

Project Details

CLIENT: Native Village of Kotzebue
LOCATION: Kotzebue, Alaska

The innovative design of the facility is a testament to the rich cultural heritage and resilience of the Native Village of Kotzebue (Qikiqtaġruk), as it boldly tackles the unique challenges posed by its Arctic location. By weaving together traditional wisdom with modern technology, the project not only addresses the extreme environmental conditions but also honors the tribal values and traditions that have sustained the community for generations.

The new facility aptly centers around the “Gathering Space,” embodying the spirit of unity and collaboration that has long been central to the tribe’s way of life. Modeled after the traditional iglu, where the Iñupiaq Iḷitqusiat members would gather for warmth and safety, the space symbolizes the importance of community and shared experiences. Strengthening the importance of the midnight-sun, the design replicates its path through the sky in a curvilinear fashion on the interior and the sky’s colors on the façade.

In striving for energy independence and efficiency, the project stands as a beacon of environmental stewardship and cultural preservation. By reducing reliance on traditional energy sources and embracing sustainable practices, the building sets a powerful example of how a net zero design adapts to the challenges of the Arctic while staying true to tribal values.

Through a combination of innovative solutions: solar panel array strategically positioned due-south to capture maximum sunlight, utilization of waste heat from the nearby power plant, the facility not only minimizes its ecological impact but also serves as a model for sustainable living that resonates deeply with the ancestral beliefs of the NVOK tribe.

Embracing renewable building materials, energy-efficient systems, and environmentally responsible features, the new facility embodies a harmonious blend of culture, tradition, and progress, showcasing how cultural heritage and cutting-edge technology can come together to create a brighter, more sustainable future for the community.
